Meet Characters From Rutgers’ Past

Program providers are gearing up for Rutgers Day!
A treat on the College Avenue Campus will be the portrayals of Rutgers alumni who have undeniably left their mark on the history of this university, and in some cases the nation. These stories will be told as if the historical characters were plucked from their respective eras. Dressed in the clothing of their time, the characters will share brief first-person accounts as if they were still alive today.

The historical characters are Paul Robeson, Julia Baxter Bates, Mabel Smith Douglass, Kusakabe Taro, Colonel Henry Rutgers, and Rutgers’ first quarterback William James Leggett.

What’s cool about this initiative is that it’s a totally collaborative effort. Some of the research was conducted by students of the History Department. Preliminary scripts were developed by Writers House students. Also, the director, playwrights, costume designer, stage manager, and actors are alumni of the Mason Gross School of the Arts Theater Arts Department, either graduates of the MFA or BFA programs.
