Participants in a junior showmanship competition at the 4-H dog show were judged on how well they handle and present their dogs.

Dogs of all sizes, shapes and colors were part of the Rutgers Day festivities Saturday as New Jersey4-H members held their annual dog show, which included a series of competitions and informational events all about man’s best friend.

“It’s one of the best days – I’ve been doing it 10 years now, ” said Denise Garber, who has served as a judge and steward at the various competitions.

This year, the junior showmanship competition may have broken its own record by drawing in 63 participants. The competition gives kids ages 9 to 18 a chance to show how well they can present and handle their dog. Other competitions focus on obedience, seeing eye, agility, and grooming.

The New Jersey4-H is a program of Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
